Winchester Psychotherapy Practice

The Winchester Psychotherapy Practice is a group of psychoanalytic psychotherapists based in and around Winchester. We seek to improve the availability of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults in the Winchester and mid Hampshire areas. All of us at WPP work within the psychodynamic approach.

What is Psychoanalytic psychotherapy?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy provides a confidential setting in which to explore safely the unconscious process that drive thoughts, feelings, memories, and fantasies.

This modality of psychotherapy can be of value to persons of all backgrounds in any field or time in life, whether you are worried or distressed, mentally, or physically ill.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy takes place within a mutually honest and respectful relationship. The purpose of this form of therapy is not only to remove suffering but to the enable a person to achieve a deeper self-understanding of the unconscious and root sources of the distress and conflicts. In resolving enduring conflicts, a person can begin to live more fully and creatively in the present and face the future more confidently.

The psychoanalytic process is geared towards helping the person speak and express his/herself spontaneously and freely, without the ordinary censorship of conscious and acquired moral judgement. This takes time to develop and may involve periods of silence and deep reflection.  This essentially, is the context for a meaningful narrative to develop with personal potential.

The language of psychoanalytic psychotherapy involves working with narratives and with the dynamics of the relationship between the patient and the therapist.
